Why Transformer Oil is essential for electrical safety?
Insulation & Preventing Electrical Faults
- Transformer oil is a proper insulating medium inside transformer, without it would lead to electrical breakdown, short circuits, etc. The oil ensures all of the electrical transformer parts remain electrically functional in any circumstances.
- Oil acts as a liquid insulation by filling gaps and voids within solid insulation. It prevents internal corona discharge and arcing that would lead to degrade insulation and electrical faults.
Thermal Safety (Overheating & Insulation Stress)
- Overheating accelerates the oxidation of transformer oil, forming acidic compounds, sludge, and other degradation products. These contaminants increase oil conductivity, reduce cooling efficiency, and can lead to restricted oil circulation, causing further temperature rise and faults.
- High temperature also accelerates the aging of cellulose insulation. A commonly accepted rule is that every 7-10 °C increase in operating temperature roughly halves the insulation life.
